D-Day - June 6, 1944

The planned invasion of the European Continent
was not known if the attempt would be a complete
success; foremost of those in the know was General Dwight D. Eisenhower,
Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces.
The night before D-Day, General Eisenhower
knowing the possibility of failure scribbled
a note that would become a news release in event
the Germans repelled the Allied forces. Here is the true text of the note.

"OUR LANDINGS IN THE CHERBOURG-HAVRE
AREA HAVE FAILED TO GAIN A SATISFACTORY FOOTHOLD
AND I HAVE WITHDRAWN THE TROOPS.
MY DECISION TO ATTACK AT THIS TIME AND PLACE
WAS BASED UPON THE BEST INFORMATION AVAILABLE.
THE TROOPS, THE AIR AND NAVY DID ALL THAT BRAVERY
AND DEVOTION TO DUTY COULD DO. IF ANY
BLAME OR FAULT ATTACHES TO THE ATTEMPT
IT IS MINE ALONE."

Fortunately, at the cost of many
thousands of lives, the landing of
forces was a success and
General Eisenhower did not have
to resort to the handwritten
note he carried in his pocket.

_______________________

This Memorial is dedicated to ALL Military Personnel - of all Allied Nations - that took part in the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944.

The Memorial site is in Bedford Virginia as authorized by The Congress of The United States of America. This decision was based on fact Bedford Virginia lost more Sons per captia on the day of the invasion than any other community in the U.S.A.

All people should know the D-Day Invasion on June 6, 1944 - with Allied Troops on the continent - was the day Nazi hold on Europe began to crumble - resulting in freeing the world of dictorial control.

OPERATION OVERLORD
JUNE 6, 1944

D-DAY REMEMBERED

Listen, a sound of voices in prayer
A hush falls over the reatless stir
among the rows of white markers

Still the sun does not set

The young, the aged, all come to remember
with speaches and tears,
the distanr wail of TAPS,

Still the sun does not set

Ceremonies completed,
accolades echo over the greens
across the beaches, out to the Channel beyond,

Still the sun does not set

Shells bursting, guns firing,
anguish cries, it all now returns,
'twas a moment in eternity,

Still the sun does not set

All who were there that day,
they that were so close, the families, a nation,
until the last of all draws a final breath

The sun will not set on this day.
